Good Friday – What a day?

GOOD FRIDAY – WHAT A DAY!

How do we describe the events of that first Good Friday 2011 years ago when the Lord Jesus died on a cruel Roman cross? Let me try and describe that day to you – the day that changed the whole course of history.

DAY OF DESTINY
The death of Christ was no accident! It was pre-determined by God the Father in eternity past. God the Son would die for the sins of all of humanity. His death was prophesied in vivid detail by the prophets. The death of Christ will change the whole course of history forever.

DAY OF DEATH
“Christ the mighty Maker dies” as the song puts it! He dies a torturous, terrible, horrible, shameful, excruciatingly painful death on a cross. He dies as the Lamb of God Who alone can take away the sin of the world.

DAY OF DISTRESS AND DESPONDENCY
Heaven wept as the sinless Son of God dies for the sins of the world. What gross injustice! There was a segment of society of that day that wept at what they saw. The Lord Jesus told them not to weep for Him but to weep for themselves as He saw the coming judgment on a nation that had rejected Him.

DAY OF DENIAL
Peter, one of His key disciples, denies ever knowing Christ, in the midst of intense pressure. Today too we deny the Lord Jesus when we compromise our convictions, and are silent when we should be speaking up for Him. Don’t deny His Person, His miracles and His teachings.

DAY OF DARKNESS
The Lord Jesus hung on the cross for six hours, from 9AM to 3PM. From noon to 3 Pm there was thick darkness that settled over the land. Darkness represents our ignorance of the truth, unbelief and love of sin.

DASHED HOPES
The disciples and the people had great hopes that the Lord Jesus would wipe out the hated Romans and inaugurate the Kingdom age. But they had completely misunderstood the mission of the Lord. He came to make atonement for sin by offering His life as the sacrifice for all sin. The people were looking for a political Messiah and not for the redemptive Messiah. When the Lord Jesus returns again He will come to establish His rule on earth.

DAY OF DEFIANCE
What a scene! Sinful, proud, depraved man rising up against their Creator! Man insulting God and shaking their fist at God. In just six hours the Lord Jesus was examined five times by four different authorities, and within twelve hours of His arrest He was put on the cross.

DAY OF DERISION
Man mocked the Lord Jesus by saying, “Come down from the cross and we will believe You”. The religious leaders taunted him by saying “He saved others, but cannot save Himself”. They laughed at Him and slandered Him! Today too, tragically there are those who blaspheme His holy name and person.

DAY OF DESOLATION
He died alone, abandoned and forsaken. His disciples forsook Him in fear. Even God the father had to turn His face away from His beloved Son, prompting the Lord Jesus to cry out, “My God, my God why have you forsaken Me?” As the Son was bearing the sins of the world, the Father had to turn His face away from the Son, on account of the sin that He was carrying in His body. We bow solemnly before such mystery and love. The Lord Jesus was forsaken so that you and I will NEVER EVER be forsaken.

DAY OF DECISION
It was a defining day! Everyone has to make a decision concerning the Lord Jesus. One thief, who hung on a cross by the side of the Lord Jesus repented and turned to Christ for salvation. He was instantly forgiven and received into paradise. Men like Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea, come out of secrecy and openly made a public declaration to side with the Lord Jesus.

How about you dear friend?

Have you repented of your sin and trusted the Lord Jesus for personal salvation?
