Who killed the Lord Jesus?

Historically we know that the Lord Jesus died on that first Good Friday 2014 years ago. The
question of the ages is who is held responsible for His death? Let’s explore a few options.

1. Perhaps we would blame the Pharisees and the religious leaders.
Lord Jesus had denounced their false worship and religion and had become a threat to
them“But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus” (Mark 12:14)

2. Or was it Pilate?
Pilate was the Roman Governor who ultimately issued the decree that the Lord be
crucified, even though he was fully convinced of the Lord’s innocence. He was afraid
to stand up to the people and he finally handed the Lord Jesus over to be crucified.
When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was
starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, “I am
innocent of this Man’s blood; see to that yourselves.” And all the people said, “His
blood shall be on us and on our children!” Then he released Barabbas for them; but
after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified. (Matthew 27:24 to 26)

3. Or was it the crowd?
How quickly they turned from following the Lord Jesus to being stirred up by the
Pharisees. It was they who cried out “crucify Him, crucify Him.” It was they who put
the pressure on Pilate. He could not survive his position if they would rise up against him.
But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to
put Jesus to death. But the governor said to them, “Which of the two do you want
me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” Pilate said to them, “Then what
shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Crucify Him!” And he said,
“Why, what evil has He done?” But they kept shouting all the more, saying, “Crucify Him!”
(Matthew 27:20 to 23)

4. Was it the soldiers?
They not only placed Him on the cross, but drove in the nails and mocked Him. They
were the ones who crucified our Lord. Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman cohort around Him. They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and
a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying,
“Hail, King of the Jews!” They spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him
on the head. After they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robe off Him and put
His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him. And when they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments among themselves by casting lots. And sitting down, they began to keep watch over Him there. (Matthew 27:27 to 31, 35, 36)

5. Or was it you or me?
After all, was it not for our sins that He died? If we had not sinned, His death would not have been necessary. Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Who killed the Lord Jesus? The real answer is none of the above. His Father killed Him! Perhaps this statement sounds too strong and even blasphemous? And yet God Himself says the same thing in His word: “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all” (Romans 8:32) “Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush Him and cause Him to suffer, and though the LORD makes His life a guilt offering, He will see His offspring and prolong His days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in His hand” (Isaiah 53:10) It was God’s will that His Son should suffer and die on the cross. That is why He sent the Lord Jesus to earth in the first place. How can a Father kill His own Son? God asked Abraham to do this very thing with his son Isaac. But just as Abraham lifted the knife over the chest of his son, God spared his son and replaced the sacrifice with a lamb caught in the thicket. But God lifted the knife of death over the chest of His son, but did not spare Him, because Jesus was the Lamb, the Lamb that was slain. Why? Why did God kill His own Son? He did this for you and me. Will you not open up your heart to receive this amazing Lord to be the ONLY Lord and Saviour of your life?

Pray this prayer sincerely from the depths of your heart.

Dear God in heaven, I come to you in the name of Jesus. I acknowledge to You that I am a sinner, and I am sorry for my sins and the life that I have lived; I need your forgiveness. I believe that your only begotten Son Jesus Christ shed His precious blood on the cross at Calvary and died for my sins, and I am now willing to turn from my sin. You said in Your Holy Word, Romans 10:9 that if we confess the Lord our God and believe in our hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead, we shall be saved. Right now I confess Jesus as the Lord of my soul. With my heart, I believe that God raised Jesus from the dead. This very moment I accept Jesus Christ as my own personal Savior and according to His Word, right now I am saved.

Thank you Jesus for your unlimited grace which has saved me from my sins. I thank you Jesus that your grace never leads to license, but rather it always leads to repentance. Therefore Lord Jesus transform my life so that I may bring glory and honor to you alone and not to myself.

Thank you Lord Jesus for dying for me and giving me Eternal Life.

Amen.

In Christ,
Rev. Benjamin Devadason
